Sciatica typically presents as a sharp, shooting, burning, or electric pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg — sometimes as far as the foot. It is usually felt on one side only. Many patients also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot. The pain often worsens with sitting, bending forward, coughing, or sneezing — all of which increase pressure on the lumbar discs and nerve roots.
